Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for a home delivery permit?

Liquor retailers can apply for a delivery permit.  Home delivery permits may also be granted to those who do not hold any other type of liquor permit.  (For example, a gift basket business wishing to include beverage alcohol in gift baskets for home delivery can apply for a delivery permit).

Do customers have to pay a fee for delivery?

Operators of the delivery service cannot charge customers more for the products than the actual purchase price paid at the liquor retailer. However, a delivery charge can be added to the order.

Who can order alcohol for delivery?

Consistent with current liquor laws, alcohol can only be ordered, sold and delivered to persons at least 19 years of age and cannot be sold to intoxicated people.  As well, alcohol can only be delivered to the person who placed the order or for whom the gift basket (containing alcohol) is ordered.

Are there restrictions regarding hours of delivery?

It is up to individual delivery businesses to decide what hours they will operate.  However, orders can only be filled during the hours and days that beverage alcohol may be legally sold in Saskatchewan.

What types of beverage alcohol products can be delivered?

Beer, wine and spirits can all be ordered for home delivery.

How will delivery companies ensure they are not providing alcohol to minors?

Delivery companies must demand proof of age and identity for all deliveries.  Delivery businesses can be sanctioned if they provide alcohol to someone who is under 19 years of age.  Delivery persons must also be at least 19 years of age.

Can delivery be refused to customers?

Yes.  Beverage alcohol and gift baskets containing beverage alcohol cannot be delivered and/or sold to anyone under the age of 19 and cannot be sold to someone who appears to be intoxicated.

Are there other rules regarding home delivery?

Customers who receive the delivery must provide legal identification and sign a receipt to confirm they received the alcohol ordered and that they are of legal age to purchase the beverage alcohol. Only the permit holder or an employee can deliver alcohol under a home delivery permit.  This function cannot be contracted out to an individual or business.

Where does the delivery company buy the alcohol that they deliver?

Delivery orders must be filled from a Saskatchewan liquor retailer. Delivery companies are prohibited from maintaining a stock of alcohol products.
